Hitler’s stand-fast orders proved disastrous for the Wehrmacht during its gradual withdrawal from Soviet territory. At Sevastopol, German and Romanian forces under the command of German general Erwin Jaenecke eventually withdrew, against Hitler’s orders. But the delayed retreat led both to Jaenecke’s court-martial and the capture of over sixty thousand German prisoners, such as those pictured here.
