Week 5

Day 1 Watch Your Words

Words from the Rock

You know that our ancestors were told, “Do not murder” and “A murderer must be brought to trial.” But I promise you that if you are angry with someone, you will have to stand trial. If you call someone a fool, you will be taken to court. And if you say that someone is worthless, you will be in danger of the fires of hell.

Matthew 5:21–22 CEV

Wow, this is a really strong warning about how powerful words can be. Has it ever occurred to you that you can say things that are as lethal as committing murder? Or maybe you’ve been severely wounded by someone else’s thoughtless words toward you. Jesus is commanding you to take the power of your tongue much more seriously. He wants you to understand that wounds from insults and putdowns can sometimes take a lifetime to heal. And some cut so deeply that they can be life threatening.

Think about it. How often have you replayed in your mind something mean that someone has said to or about you? How many times have you felt pain when you remembered some harsh words directed at you? Is it possible that you’ve inflicted that same kind of pain on someone else? If so, you’d better do whatever it takes to make it right. And although you can’t undo the words that were said, you might remember to think before you speak next time.

The old adage “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all” may sound trite, but the truth is, it would be much better to keep your mouth shut than to have to stand before Jesus and confess to having murdered someone with your tongue.

My Prayer

Dear God,

Help me to be more careful with my words. Remind me of the poison that can be slipped into a seemingly small insult. I need your help to control this tongue of mine. Please show me when it’s time to keep my mouth shut.

Amen.

Final Word

My tongue will speak of your righteousness

and of your praises all day long.

Psalm 35:28 NIV

Stone for the Journey

I will control my tongue or keep my mouth shut.
