Words from the Rock
What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.
Matthew 6:31–33 Message
More than anything, Jesus wants you to get connected to God. He wants you to know God intimately and to love God completely—just like Jesus does. He says that if you didn’t know God, you’d have reason to be worried. But because you do know God, you should know that he is caring for you. And for that reason, you shouldn’t be concerned about having what you need. God will provide!
But maybe you’re still wondering, How do I get to know God? The answer is: the same way you get to know anyone. Say you meet a guy that you really like, but you don’t really know him—what do you do? Assuming this guy likes you too, you would probably begin spending time together. You would talk and do things together, and before long you would know each other.
It’s no different with God. You spend time with him. You talk to him. You listen. You tell him your secrets. You find out his likes and dislikes. You begin to care about the same things he cares about. In time, you and God are best friends, and you wonder how you ever got along without him. And guess what? While you’re doing all this—focusing your attention and energy on getting to know God—he is quietly taking care of everything you need.
My Prayer
Dear God,
I know that I need to know you better. Show me how I can spend more time with you. Help me to talk to you openly, even in those moments when I think I don’t want to. Thank you for taking care of all that I need.
Amen.
Final Word
I will bless you with a future filled with hope—a future of success, not of suffering.
Jeremiah 29:11 CEV
Stone for the Journey
I will spend time with God, knowing that he is taking care of what I need.
