Words from the Rock
Be wary of false preachers who smile a lot, dripping with practiced sincerity. Chances are they are out to rip you off some way or other. Don’t be impressed with charisma; look for character. Who preachers are is the main thing, not what they say. A genuine leader will never exploit your emotions or your pocketbook. These diseased trees with their bad apples are going to be chopped down and burned.
Matthew 7:15–20 Message
Jesus, being one with God and supernatural, knew that lots of false teachers and preachers would come after his earthly ministry ended. He knew that many would attempt to lead people astray in “the name of Jesus.” Whether they did it for money or prestige or power, or simply because they were mixed up, Jesus knew that those teachers and preachers would be around for a long time. Just like he predicted, there were many that came shortly after his death and resurrection. And now, more than two thousand years later, they’re still around.
But how do you know whether a spiritual leader is the real deal? Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to figure out—at first. Most false preachers have natural charm and charisma. They have the kind of traits that draw people in. They seem well spoken and smart. They appear to be warm and friendly and personable—just like a legitimate preacher. So how do you know who’s who?
For one thing, a false teacher or preacher places a lot of focus on money—particularly yours. Too much pressure to give financially is not a good sign. Also, a false teacher might jerk you around emotionally, pushing you to places far beyond your comfort zone and not even healthy. Also, they may have a bad track record—a history of hurting others, moving around a lot, broken marriages, money problems. All are signs that something’s wrong. Does that mean preachers and teachers can’t make mistakes? Of course not. Everyone makes mistakes. But a legitimate leader will admit his failures and change his ways. A false leader won’t.
My Prayer
Dear God,
Please help me to know the difference between a false leader and someone who truly loves and serves you. Help me to be part of a healthy church.
Amen.
Final Word
Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.

Don’t be so impressed with outward appearances that you miss what lies beneath.
