Week 14

Day 1 Keep It Simple

Words from the Rock

Don’t think you have to put on a fund-raising campaign before you start. You don’t need a lot of equipment. You are the equipment, and all you need to keep that going is three meals a day. Travel light.

Matthew 10:9–10 Message

Jesus was still talking to his followers in this verse, giving them some tips for the adventures they were about to begin—whether it meant returning to their hometowns or returning to someplace else. And it makes sense that some of them would be concerned about all the various details involved. Because many of them had given up jobs—they lived with Jesus and trusted him for their provision while they were on the road—they suddenly got a little worried about how things would go when they stepped out on their own without Jesus. How would they fund their traveling expenses? Where would they stay? What would they eat? What did they need to take with them?

But Jesus was very casual about the whole thing. He told them not to fuss about money or what they thought they might need because he knew they already had what they needed. They’d been listening to Jesus teach and preach for some time now, and they’d seen him do miracles. The most important part of their mission was right with them, hidden safely in their hearts. Jesus had already seen to that. And he had been trying to teach them by example that God would provide them with food and take care of their basic needs. They just needed to have faith—and to go.

That’s the most important thing for us to keep in mind too. When God sends us to tell someone something, he will give us what we need to do it. That means we don’t need to have a Bible in hand. We don’t need a little booklet or bracelet or button to give the person. We just need to have a ready and willing heart—and trust God to do the rest.

My Prayer

Dear God,

Thank you for teaching me so many good things. Thank you for changing me from the inside. And I know that if you want me to tell someone about what you’re doing, you will give me what it takes to do it.

Amen.

Final Word

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

Stone for the Journey

God will not send you where he hasn’t already equipped you to go.
