Day 2 Reaching Out

Words from the Rock

When you enter a town or village, don’t insist on staying in a luxury inn. Get a modest place with some modest people, and be content there until you leave.

When you knock on a door, be courteous in your greeting. If they welcome you, be gentle in your conversation. If they don’t welcome you, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way. You can be sure that on Judgment Day they’ll be mighty sorry—but it’s no concern of yours now.

Matthew 10:11–15 Message

Jesus was giving even more instructions for this new outreach ministry. But the counsel he gave his disciples and followers then is no different than what he would say today. For starters, Jesus points out that you don’t have to seek out the best or the fanciest accommodations. That’s because he doesn’t want you to put yourself in places where you’ll appear superior to the ones he’s called you to reach out to. He doesn’t want you to be out of touch with those who are in serious need.

Then he encourages you to be courteous as you speak to people. Now, that doesn’t seem like a big deal, except that almost everyone has heard stories of “Christians” who attempt to “minister” in bossy, know-it-all, smug ways. And what does that accomplish? Jesus says to be thoughtful and kind, and if the person you’re speaking with responds and asks you to, say, have a cup of coffee, don’t turn them down. As you talk, be compassionate in your words. Instead of pointing out that person’s problems, show how Jesus is loving and merciful. And then see what happens. Most people will warm up and want to hear more.

But if the person gets mad or doesn’t want to listen or attempts to engage you in some ridiculous religious argument, don’t make a scene. Just smile and shrug your shoulders and head on your way. It’s not your fault that they don’t get it. Besides, it might just be a matter of timing with that person—they might not be ready to hear the truth. But maybe you’ve planted some seeds of truth in them. And by you not reacting or getting mad, those seeds have a greater chance of growing someday. Remember that God is in charge of the outcome of the harvest. You’re more like a tool in his hand.

My Prayer

Dear God,

There’s so much to learn about telling others about you. Please teach me and show me so I can do my part.

Amen.

Final Word

Peace and prosperity to you, your family, and everything you own!
