Words from the Rock
When people realize it is the living God you are presenting and not some idol that makes them feel good, they are going to turn on you, even people in your own family. There is a great irony here: proclaiming so much love, experiencing so much hate! But don’t quit. Don’t cave in. It is all well worth it in the end. It is not success you are after in such times but survival. Be survivors! Before you’ve run out of options, the Son of Man will have arrived.
Matthew 10:21–23 Message
People who aren’t living for God sometimes feel threatened by those who are. For instance, if you’re seen doing something that shows you have a different moral code (say, you’re trying to obey God by not drinking alcohol), it might make someone (the guy who thinks it’s cool to drink alcohol) feel uncomfortable. As a result, you might have to take some flak. There’s also a chance that someone in your own family or maybe a friend will turn against you if you stand up for what you believe (and it’s not what they believe). Jesus said to expect this.
He also said that even if you handle a tough situation in a really kind and nonjudgmental way—like you show a person you love them despite your differences—the person might still turn on you. In fact, they might return your kindness with hostility and hatred. But don’t let that stop you from being loving and patient with that person, because that’s how hearts are changed. At the very least, you will be changed. When you love someone who’s picking on you, it’s like you’re loving with a very pure, godly love—and, as a result, you become more like him.
Jesus says even if it gets really, really hard, don’t give up. Hang in there. And be assured that God will never ask more than you (with his power) are able to take. Just when it feels hopeless, he’ll step in and intervene.
My Prayer
Dear God,
Help me to remember that I will be picked on because of you—and that that’s a good thing. Please love others through me.
Amen.
Final Word
Everyone will hate you because of me. But if you keep on being faithful right to the end, you will be saved.

Stone for the Journey
Don’t be surprised when God’s goodness threatens nonbelievers.
