Day 5 Puzzle Pieces

Words from the Rock

I have explained the secrets about the kingdom of heaven to you, but not to others. Everyone who has something will be given more. But people who don’t have anything will lose even what little they have. I use stories when I speak to them because when they look, they cannot see, and when they listen, they cannot hear or understand.

Matthew 13:11–13 CEV

Jesus is responding to his disciples’ question about why he so often used stories to teach people. First he reminds them that he’s disclosed to them almost everything regarding faith and God already. Jesus’s reasoning is that these twelve men, chosen by him, are capable of grasping some deep spiritual truths. In fact, that’s why he chose them. At the same time, he knows that others aren’t quite so ready—not yet.

Jesus knew that most of his listeners wouldn’t really get the depth of his messages. That’s because he was introducing what was about to begin a major revolution in religion—it would change everything! So he used stories in order to give his listeners a little something to hold on to for later. He knew that people are good at remembering and retelling stories. Even if they didn’t get the real spiritual meaning in the story right away, they would recall the story later, and eventually the truth would sink in.

That’s why he says that those who have something will be given more. It’s like we all receive some pieces of this faith puzzle, and even if they don’t seem to work or fit at first, they will eventually make perfect sense. In other words, none of us gets the whole picture of what God is up to right from the start. It’s a process of living, learning, and experiencing God as we continue to follow his will, and as he makes himself known to us more and more.

My Prayer

Dear God,

Help me to understand that I can’t possibly grasp all spiritual meanings right from the start. Help me to be patient and persistent as I get to know you better each day.

Amen.

Final Word

Jesus used stories to tell all these things to the people; he always used stories to teach them. This is as the prophet said: “I will speak using stories; I will tell things that have been secret since the world was made.”

Matthew 13:34–35 NCV

Stone for the Journey

I believe God will provide the spiritual truth I need for this day.
