Day 5 Single Hearts

Words from the Rock

Only those people who have been given the gift of staying single can accept this teaching. Some people are unable to marry because of birth defects or because of what someone has done to their bodies. Others stay single for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Anyone who can accept this teaching should do so.

Matthew 19:11–12 CEV

After Jesus answers the Pharisees about divorce, his disciples grow concerned and say, “If that’s how it is between a man and a woman, it’s better not to get married” (v. 10 CEV). You can almost hear the fear in their voices. It’s no wonder, since the disciples (from varied homes and backgrounds) have suspected their lives would change as a result of following Jesus. Most are single, and some are married but away from their wives. Ones like Peter, in light of his call to ministry, might have been questioning the practicality of marriage in general.

Jesus gently but honestly answers them, saying that some people do have the gift of remaining single and that they would surely agree with what the disciples have just suggested. He also points out that some people don’t marry because of the way they are, while some will stay single for reasons of faith. Obviously, based on his other teachings, Jesus believes many will find it best to marry.

Basically, Jesus is saying that everyone’s situation, each one’s path, will be different. We each have to figure out what God’s best plan is for us. We shouldn’t tell someone else how to live his or her life. Jesus obviously knew that the early church would begin after his death and resurrection, and he must have suspected marriage would be just one of the issues they would grapple with. Even so, Jesus doesn’t lay down the law—that’s not who he is. He simply speaks the truth, suggesting that each of us will have to figure out which is right for us—staying single or being married. It’s between us and God.

My Prayer

Dear God,

Whether you want me to remain single or get married someday, I want to do what you want me to. Please show me your perfect will for my life.

Amen.
