Words from the Rock
If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.
John 8:31–32 NASB
Who doesn’t long for freedom? There’s a place inside of everyone that just wants to be free.
Sometimes you may get confused over what freedom really means. Maybe you think it’s a day off from your normal routines and responsibilities. Or maybe you think it’s getting something for nothing. Or maybe it’s sliding through a situation where you should’ve been nailed—getting home free.
The freedom Jesus is talking about is a lot bigger and a lot more lasting than those things. It’s a soul-deep sort of freedom that feels like a load’s been lifted from your shoulders. It eases your conscience and helps you to sleep better. And it basically simplifies your life and lifts your spirits.
But this kind of freedom isn’t really free—it comes with a cost. For starters, Jesus paid dearly for this freedom. The price was his death on the cross. His resurrection became his ultimate freedom—and the reason this kind of freedom is offered to you. Yet there’s still a cost for you. The price is simply everything. It’s up to you to hand your entire life to God—to entrust all to him, believe in him, study his Word, and know his truth. When you pay that everything price, which is actually pretty small compared to what you receive in return, you will experience real freedom. Because you know God’s truth, you are set free.
My Prayer
Dear God,
I want your truth in my life. I’m willing to pay the price—to surrender all to you—so that I can have your real freedom.
Amen.
Final Word
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
John 16:13 NIV
Stone for the Journey
