Words from the Rock
The stone the masons threw out is now the cornerstone. This is God’s work; we rub our eyes, we can hardly believe it! This is the way it is with you. God’s kingdom will be taken back from you and handed over to a people who will live out a kingdom life. Whoever stumbles on this Stone gets shattered; whoever the Stone falls on gets smashed.
Matthew 21:42–44 Message
If you look at the Empire State Building, you will see more than 1,450 feet of astounding height. A truly stunning building, it towers over New York City with an art deco style and a metropolitan majesty that is impossible to miss. But what is it that you don’t see? Most people probably never think about the fifty-five-foot foundation that lurks underneath this amazing building. They can’t even see it, but even if they could, it’s not much to look at—just an enormous solid mass buried beneath the ground. Yet it’s this very foundation that anchors that huge building to the earth. Unseen but essential.
As important as that foundation is, it’s the cornerstone that really holds things together. The cornerstone, an integral part of the foundation, is the piece that ensures the building is straight and level and square. Without a true cornerstone, the Empire State Building would tip, the structure would fall, and all that would be left is a heap of rubble.
Jesus is like that cornerstone. He is the true foundational piece that God built his church on. Yet the religious leaders of Jesus’s day rejected him and his truth. Is it any wonder that their world fell apart after they tossed him aside?
Jesus wants to be your cornerstone as well. He wants to be that solid rock, straight and true, that you build your life on. When you are securely anchored to him, you will be strong enough to withstand the worst earthquake.
My Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you for being my rock-solid cornerstone. Help me to build my life on your foundation.
Amen.
Final Word
Come to Jesus Christ. He is the living stone that people have rejected, but which God has chosen and highly honored.
