Words from the Rock
I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
John 14:27 NLT
Some people spend their whole lives looking for something they cannot see, touch, hear, smell, or taste. Yet they long for this intangible thing like a starving man longs for food. Some people spend fortunes and purchase expensive homes, cars, boats—material possessions that they dream will deliver this elusive entity—and even when their money is gone, they remain unsatisfied. Some travel the globe, climb mountains, sit at the feet of gurus, and even withdraw in solitude in pursuit of this hard-to-find thing. A few go so far as to practice forms of self-torture and deprivation in the hopes that they will secure this obscure thing, yet it evades them. They cannot get their hands on it.
What is it they so diligently seek? What is it their souls crave? Peace. Peace of mind and peace of heart—a deep inner peace that the world doesn’t offer, a peace that cannot be earned or bought. Jesus says that kind of peace is a priceless gift that only he can give. And he gives it to you for free. A priceless gift . . . for free.
In an era when prescription drugs, sleeping aids, and other pseudo substitutes for peace are more popular than ever, Jesus’s peace is unique—one of a kind. It’s the kind of inner calm that can keep you from losing it when everything around you is falling apart—a peace and assurance that can exist in the midst of chaos. Why wouldn’t everyone be lining up to receive this kind of peace from Jesus? Why would you look anywhere else for it?
If people understood the depth and power of this peace, they wouldn’t settle for anything less. Would you?
My Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you that your peace is a free gift. Remind me to come to you daily to receive this gift. Show me how to share this peace with others.
Amen.
Final Word
Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.
Romans 5:1 NLT
