Week 45

Day 1 Distractions

Words from the Rock

When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.

Matthew 24:37–39 NLT

Again Jesus is talking about the end of time and how vital it will be for us to remain connected to him and tuned in. Envision being on an elegant cruise ship out in the middle of the sea. It’s one of those mega ships with everything anyone could possibly want to do—lots of swimming pools, a water park, rock climbing, wakeboarding, skeet shooting, golf, restaurants, shopping, theaters . . . and the list goes on. It’s a floating party.

Then there’s an announcement that something is wrong and that passengers should report to the lifeboat areas. Well, the ship seems solid enough, the sky is blue, and the music is still playing, so the fun continues, and most of the passengers just ignore the warning. They think, What could possibly be wrong?

Remember the Titanic?

Jesus says it will be somewhat like that in the last days. He warns us that many people will be so distracted with having a good time—partying to the max—that they’ll be oblivious to what’s really going on and the approaching danger. Like the passengers on the Titanic, who felt it was impossible for such a humongous ship to sink, they will ignore the warnings. Many will refuse to get into the lifeboats . . . until it’s too late. That’s why Jesus wants you to keep tuned in to him. He wants your spiritual ears to be listening and your spiritual eyes to be wide open so you’ll know what’s coming, so you’ll be ready and eagerly waiting. Don’t be distracted!

My Prayer

Dear God,

I always want to stay tuned in to you. Help me to realize when something in my life is trying to distract me from you. Keep me connected to you.

Amen.

Final Word

You have faith in God, whose power will protect you until the last day. Then he will save you, just as he has always planned to do.

1 Peter 1:5 CEV
