Week 47

Day 1 Before the Dawn

Words from the Rock

Are you trying to figure out among yourselves what I meant when I said, “In a day or so you’re not going to see me, but then in another day or so you will see me”? Then fix this firmly in your minds: You’re going to be in deep mourning while the godless world throws a party. You’ll be sad, very sad, but your sadness will develop into gladness.

John 16:19–20 Message

You’ve probably heard the saying, “It’s darkest right before the dawn.” It’s true—the world can seem like a cold, black place when you’re in the midst of a really difficult time. Whether you’re grieving a lost friendship, a broken heart, or even a death, the world can feel hopeless and bleak.

Jesus knew his disciples were about to go through a rough period like that. He knew they would feel lost, deserted, even in despair. But he wanted them to understand it would only be temporary, that their overwhelming sadness would be replaced with joy and gladness. He didn’t want them to lose hope.

Jesus knows you’ll have times like that in your life. Maybe they will never be as dark and discouraging as the three days his disciples spent thinking that the world as they knew it had ended, that the hope of the world had died on the cross. Still, Jesus is aware that your life won’t always be smooth and easy. That’s not how it is for anyone who chooses to follow him. He knows there will be ups and downs. There will be sad times and happy times. But the sun will always rise after a night of darkness and despair. In time, your joy will return . . . and someday you’ll experience sunlight and joy forever.

My Prayer

Dear God,

I realize my earthly life isn’t supposed to be nonstop sunshine and gladness. When times are dark, please remind me it won’t always be like that.

Amen.

Final Word

If we live in the light, as God does, we share in life with each other. And the blood of his Son Jesus washes all our sins away.

1 John 1:7 CEV

God replaces my darkness with light.
