Words from the Rock
Father, the time has come for you to bring glory to your Son, in order that he may bring glory to you. And you gave him power over all people, so that he would give eternal life to everyone you give him.
John 17:1–2 CEV
Before Jesus came to earth, most religions were extremely exclusive. Remember how the scribes and Pharisees and religious leaders seemed to do everything possible to keep ordinary people from getting close to God? It was as if they felt it was their job to build a giant wall around God, posting signs that said “Keep Out” or “No Trespassing” or “Stay Away.” There were other religions that weren’t much different, as if religion was a private club—for members only. They had to pay their dues, be born in a certain family, obey certain rules, act a certain way, or live in a certain neighborhood just to be good enough to belong.
But Jesus said, “Enough!” Fed up with man-made efforts to separate people from God, Jesus was done with exclusivity. He opened his arms wide, inviting anyone and everyone to come and receive him. Then with arms still spread wide, he died on the cross so that God would welcome all believers into his kingdom. Unlike the other uptight religions, Jesus’s rules were simple—love God and love others, and come on along!
When Jesus said he came for “all people” and for “everyone,” he meant it. His love is not limited, and his mercy is endless. And he wants you to be an extension of his love and mercy to everyone around you. No walls. No barriers. No cliques. No exclusions. This is a party where everyone is invited. All are welcome. The way you show that you belong to Jesus is by inviting others into your life—with open arms!
My Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you for welcoming me into your family. Help me to be warm and inviting to everyone around me. I don’t want to exclude anyone.
Amen.
Final Word
Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.
