This book would not have happened but for the vision, support, collaborative assistance, and expertise of many other individuals. If the human superorganism represents a cast of thousands, then this book on the superorganism has a cast of a least tens to hundreds. I extend thanks to all, even if many are unnamed. I remain forever grateful for those who helped steer me into and through this writing endeavor.
First and foremost, my thanks go to my wife, Janice. She kept telling me that I needed to write this book even when it seemed as if other projects were destined to block the way. In some ways, my primary role was merely to have the good sense to listen to my wife. Once the book was undertaken, Janice’s knowledge base, editorial skills, and writing prowess were invaluable in translating my scientific jargon into something more readable. This book would not have been written but for Janice.
The editors at Dutton and, specifically, Stephen Morrow and Adam O’Brien, deserve special thanks. They believed in this project early on, provided the context and opportunity, and were ever ready with expert guidance that was instrumental in the development of this book. I am in awe of their professional expertise and marvel at the skill with which they pursue their craft.
I want to thank my former graduate students and postdoctoral researchers as well as numerous research collaborators who span many decades of my career. They contributed so much to our scientific knowledge base and were critical partners in my own scientific journey.
I have a deep appreciation for the culture of my department at Cornell, led by Dr. Avery August, and the entire scholarly environment of Cornell University. To paraphrase Ezra Cornell’s vision, it is a place where anyone can come to learn anything. I feel like I have spent my academic career making the most of the educational richness that Cornell has to offer to all who set foot on our campus. For any future college students reading this book, if you are curious about life, Cornell is the place for you.
Finally, I want to thank my parents, extended family, and many teachers. They created an environment in which the entire world was open to me and I could pursue my dreams. I will never forget their role and the importance of simply allowing things to unfold.
