Flowers

It’s so easy to work in the round and create fast and simply stunning brooches or hair clips. Adorn these little lovelies with buttons or beads for added sparkle.

MEASUREMENTS

One size.

Loopy flower approx 7cm (2¾in) diameter.

Small daisy approx 6cm (2½in) diameter.

Large daisy approx 9cm (3½in) diameter.

Small flower approx 4cm (1½in) diameter.

YARN

1 x 50g ball – approx 120m (131yds) – Rico Essentials Merino DK, 100% merino in each of:

Yarn A: shade 65, yellow

Yarn B: shade 20, lilac

Yarn C: shade 04, acacia

Yarn D: shade 10, magenta

Yarn E: shade 01, rose

Yarn F: shade 45, mint

Yarn G: shade 19, mulberry

ALTERNATIVE YARNS

Use any scraps of yarn in differing weights here – simply change the hook accordingly. The flowers will turn out different sizes, but that will just add to their charm! This project uses very small amounts of yarn, so is perfect for using up leftovers from other projects.

Exact tension isn’t essential for this project.

PATTERN NOTES

Daisies and small flower worked in the round, do not turn throughout. Loopy flower is worked in rows.

DAISIES

First round same for both daisies:

Using 3.5mm hook and yarn A, ch 6 and join into ring with a sl st.

Rnd 1: Work 20dc into ring, join rnd with a sl st.

Fasten off yarn A.

LARGE DAISY

Join yarn B to any dc with a sl st.

Rnd 2: Ch 20, (sl st into next dc, ch 20) around, join last petal to bottom of first ch with a sl st.

Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

SMALL DAISY

Join yarn B to any dc with a sl st.

Rnd 2: Ch 10, (miss 1 dc, sl st into next dc, ch 10) around, join last petal to bottom of first ch with a sl st.

Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

LOOPY FLOWER

Using 3.5mm hook and yarn C, ch 5.

Row 1: Work 1 dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc into each ch to end of row, turn. 4dc

Row 2: Ch 30, dc in dc at base of ch, dc to end of row, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, dc to end of row, turn.

Row 4: Ch 30, dc in dc at base of ch, dc to end of row, turn.

Rep rows 3–4 eight times more.

Change to yarn D.

Next row: Ch 1, dc to end of row, turn.

Next row: Ch 25, dc in dc at base of ch, dc to end of row, turn.

Next row: Ch 1, dc to end of row, turn.

Rep last two rows nine times more.

Change to yarn E.

Next row: Ch 1, dc to end of row, turn.

Next row: Ch 20, dc in dc at base of ch, dc to end of row, turn.

Next row: Ch 1, dc to end of row, turn.

Rep last two rows nine times more.

Fasten off.

Roll up strip with smaller loops in the middle and secure in place by sewing together through the dc section at the back.

SMALL FLOWER

Using 3.5mm hook and yarn F, ch 3.

Rnd 1: Work 5dc into first ch, join rnd with a sl st.

Rnd 2: Work 2dc into each st around, join rnd with a sl st. 10dc

Rnd 3: (1dc, 2dc into next st) around, join rnd with a sl st. 15dc

Fasten off yarn F.

Join yarn G to any dc with a sl st.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, 2tr into each of next 2 sts, (1dc, 2tr into each of next 2 sts) to end of rnd, join rnd with a sl st in 1-ch.

5 petals made

Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

FINISHING

Attach brooch back, safety pin or hairclip to the back of each flower to secure. Sew buttons and beads to the fronts for embellishment if desired.
