French Ballet Terms

Arabesque – to balance on one paw while gracefully extending the other paw and tail.

Barre – a paw rail usually found round the walls of a dance studio. For use when doing barre exercises to focus the mind and warm up the muscles.

Bourrées – very quick, tiny steps.

Capriole – a playful leap or to spring like a young deer.

Plié and Demi-plié – to bend at the knees.

Derriére – the tail end.

Entrechat – to spring up, crossing hind paws from front to back and front again. Or if you like, the other way round.

Fouettés – to spin like an egg whisk.

Glissade – to slide, to glide.

Grand jetés – big leaps.

Pirouette – to turn on one paw.

Pas de bourrée – to move paws from one position to another.
