Grandma’s Apple Crisp

Use any variety of apples — try Granny Smith for a more tart taste. Even the topping has a little “here’s to health” thrown in!

Serves 8–10

Ingredients

Nonstick cooking spray

12 cup flour

34 cup brown sugar

3 tablespoons trans-fat-free margarine

1 cup rolled oats

6 to 8 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

14 cup sugar

14 teaspoon cinnamon

1 tablespoon lemon juice

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. Use a shallow round pie pan, and spray with nonstick cooking spray.

  3. Prepare streusel by placing flour, sugar, and margarine in food processor, pulsing until a coarse texture. Add oatmeal, and continue pulsing to break it up.

  4. Place half the streusel mixture on the bottom of pan.

  5. Mix the apples, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Place mixture on top of the streusel. Top with remaining streusel.

  6. Bake for 1 hour; cover for the first 20 minutes. Uncover for the remainder of the baking time.

No Need to Give Up Dessert

The goal for keeping your family healthy is the concept of moderation. It is important that you teach this to your children, and allow them, even prepare for them, healthier desserts. Incorporate them into your mealtime on occasion. Let them learn that there are no foods that are “off limits” — self-control is the ultimate lesson here, which will hopefully last them a lifetime!
