The word “talent” usually evokes images of great musicians, actors, and artists. When we think of talent in this limited sense, however, we feel untalented if we aren’t gifted in any of these areas. The truth is, talents come in as many shapes and sizes as there are people, and God has given each of us one or more.
What are some of the not-so-obvious talents? Compassion is one. Do you feel kindness toward someone in a distressing situation? Then you have been given a talent! Use that feeling to write a letter of encouragement to someone you know who is in need. Do you like to plan surprises for people who may otherwise feel forgotten or left out? Then you are gifted! Don’t bury that talent—use it to bring joy to another person.
Perhaps you have the gift of seeing something good in every individual. That is a gift all Christians need to cultivate. Affirm the good in someone, and then spread the “good news” about them. It usually takes someone else to see and bring out the best in people. You may see a talent in a person that he or she doesn’t even know about!
Do you have a calm spirit in the midst of calamity? Can you think clearly when surrounded by turmoil? Then you are gifted—and your talent is very much in need.
That was a talent Jesus demonstrated when He slept through the storm on a boat, didn’t lose sight of His purpose when facing the angry crowd, and faced His death sentence on the cross.
Do you have a cup of cold water to offer another person? Then you have a gift. Use it in the name of Jesus and for the glory of God.
