Create a colorful, textured art journal background with embossed images using handmade free-motion stamps.
free-motion stitched craft foam stamps
mixed-media journal paper
embossing powder
heat gun
fluid acrylic paint and spray inks
hot glue stencil
brayer
1-inch (2.5mm) flat brush
archival dye ink
pigment inkpad
Stamp a free-motion craft foam stamp pattern onto mixed-media journal paper using ink. While the ink is still wet, sprinkle on embossing powder, glitter or flocking powder. Heat the embossing powder with a heat gun to activate until it begins to shine and becomes dry.
Once the embossing powder is dry, add more layers. Spray ink through a hot glue stencil. After the stencil has been used as a mask and is still wet with paint, turn over the wet stencil onto the background and burnish with a soft rubber brayer to make a print. Let it dry.
Use a wet brush to apply a wash of color over the paper and let dry. Stamp more images over the top using archival inks to create an interesting pattern.
Add a final wash of paint over the top of the dried ink and paint using a flat brush. This will help pull the page together.
