For years, I’ve been using Plexiglas for most of my monotype printmaking. It’s an inexpensive substrate, is easily accessible and makes a great surface to create prints without a press. I’ve also used plastic gallon bags, page protectors, freezer paper, transparencies, Dura-Lar and parchment paper, but my favorite to work with is Plexi. The techniques I share are starting points for exploration and Plexi can be interchanged with any of the materials mentioned above. My methods are all about play and experimenting—building layers on multiple pages fast so no two paintings look exactly the same.
In this section, we will combine the unique tools from part one with digital and traditional printmaking techniques to produce one-of-a-kind monoprints. We’ll start with the basics and work our way through the various techniques I use to create my layered paintings. We’ll practice building colorful layers, using subtractive methods to wipe away paint, scribbling with skewers, creating translucent acrylic skins, pulling prints and much, much more. Let’s get ready to play and print!
