My wife, Vivien Lougheed, and editor Marlyn Horsdal got me going on the story and kept me at it. Al Lewis, Dick North and Raymond Patterson, Nahanni pioneers, wrote books describing the characters and their lives. Lewis told me other parts of his story and described Harry Vandaele in more detail than he’d given in his book. Moira Farrow wrote a valuable description of Albert Faille. Howell Martyn, in 1952, walked some of the route taken by Wade and Eppler in the book. He described it to me and gave me Norm Thomas’s photos and unpublished description of the country.
W. D. Addison & Associates, working for Parks Canada, interviewed the Nahanni pioneers in the last years of their lives. Sherry Bradford gave me access to her father George Dalziel’s notebooks and photos, and described him to me. Her brother, Byron Dalziel, provided more information. David Raup sent me his father Hugh Miller Raup’s photos and book about Glacier Lake. Dudley Bolyard sent me his geological description of the lake and the Cirque of the Unclimbables.
Bob Brown, my brother-in-law, and Sheldon Clare helped me with the guns and, along with Audrey McClellan, Bruce Serafin and my daughter, Jennifer Harris, did story edits at the early stages of the book. The College of New Caledonia, from which I recently retired, continues to provide me with working space, research assistance and encouragement.
