Where Is She?

I

woke up to silence. It was not an eerie silence, but it was silence, nonetheless. I gradually opened my eyes to the dim lighting of a hospital room. For a while, I just stared at the ceiling, trying to remember everything. Annette. It was Annette. It was her all along.

Did they get her? I turned my head to see Nathan staring at me with eyes that looked like they had seen a hundred years' worth of sorrow. He was breathing so silently that I could only hear it if I focused.

He saw me looking at him and simply held my gaze for a minute. “It was her.” My own voice sounded foreign to me. “I know.” Silence. “Did they get her?” Silence. “No. The pill she took was for suicide. She died before we could hold her accountable.” I felt a hollowness in my heart. It was all over, but I felt no happiness. She got away.

She said she would get away with everything, and she did. "How is Anthony?" "He is okay. No physical harm." "How did you guys find us?" "Our phone call. It was weird. Your voice sounded so emotionless, and I could hear tree leaves rustling in the background. You showed no reaction when I said it was Taylor. I knew something was wrong. I called Max, and when she checked, you were nowhere to be found.

We tracked your phone, and it got us here. I figured out it was Annette, not Taylor, after our phone call. It felt like you already knew and that it was not Taylor. We found you guys in the location she had originally given Anthony. To be honest, a part of me did suspect Annette, but my heart simply was not ready to admit it.

We can only thank God that I called you on time and we got to you guys before she did something. Now that I am thinking about it, it makes so much sense that she was the murderer. How did we not see this coming?" Silence. She got away. “It was her.” Silence.
