Jacob cracked the door open and peeked inside to make sure that the coast was clear before he opened the door all the way. Once he was sure that there was nobody in the hall that could see him enter, he turned back to the breezeway and motioned for Tina to climb down and come over to where he was at the door. He looked both directions down between the buildings to make sure the coast was clear while she climbed down to join him. Once she was off of the roof and ran over to him, they both went inside the building, shutting the door behind them so that nothing could follow them.
“Quickly, in here.” He said as he pulled her into the janitor closet.
“Here is a once piece jump suit, a little big but it will work.” She said as she pulled the suit off of the hook on the wall and began to put the suit on.
“That looks good on you.” Jacob laughed as he looked at her with the suit on.
“Yeah, it’s not very flattering, but it will do the job.” She replied. “Now lets get the hell out her here.”
“Come on.” Jacob said as he opened the closet door, and looked down the hallway. He then motioned for her to follow him as they left the closet and went back to the door to get back outside. He opened the door, just a crack, and looked out and listened to see if he could see anyone or hear anyone that may be close to them. He did not hear anyone near the door, just the screams and cries of people off in the distance a little. He opened the door enough for them to get back outside. Once they were outside, he shut the door and grabbed her by the hand and lead her down the side of the building to the rear of the building, hoping that there will not be anyone there. They stop just at the end of the building, Jacob peeks around the end to look, and when he does he sees one of the infected crouched down over a body of one of the soldiers, no, he wasn’t eating the man, but he was just looking at the face of the man. Then, for some reason he seemed to sense that he was being watched, and he glances up and sees Jacob looking around the corner.
He stands up and turns towards the corner of the building. Before he could scream or make a move to the side of the building, Jacob puts the pistol around the edge and fires a round, striking the man right in the forehead. He falls straight backwards, and Jacob takes Tina by the hand and leads her to the back of the building. They walk over and they look at the infected man, they look at him to see what physical changes had taken place to the guy.
“I would really like to get him on a table where I can get a better look at him and get some tissue samples to look at under the microscope.” Tina commented as she looked at the man and tried to figure out what had happened to him.
“Come on, we don’t have the time to sit and do experiments on the guy, he is dead, and if we don’t get moving we may be joining him very soon.” Jacob said as they moved from the back of the building and headed towards the back of the next building trying to make their way over to the fence so that they could skirt the compound.
They made it over to the back of the next building, but as they started to round the corner, Jacob stuck out his arm and stopped Tina from stepping out from behind him.
“What is the matter?” She asked as she was pushing his arm away from her breasts.
“Look, I can see the guard tower.” He said as he squatted down at the edge of the building.
“So, chances are with everything going on there is probably not anyone inside.” She replied as she stepped to the side of him and began to walk out around the corner. As she stepped around the side of the building, she heard what sounded to her like some men yelling, then she looked over and saw a group of about eight soldiers, running out from the area of the tower. She froze in her tracks, and watched as the group of men headed towards the front of the building, out of her sight.
“What the hell are you doing? We need to get out of this open area.” Jacob yelled as he ran out from the side of the building, grabbed Tina by the hand, and they ran for the safety between the buildings from where they were hiding.
Once they were back between the buildings, he looked at her and told her, “We need to go back that way and find a different way around, there is no telling how many more soldiers are out there.”
“Where are we going to go then?” She asked as she was looking back behind them, as if she was trying to think of another way that they could run.
“Wait a minute.” Jacob said, as he looked around the corner of the building to the front gate, and saw a car pull in that looked real close to the car that he had seen in the parking lot at the docks.
“What?”
“I recognize that car pulling in.” Jacob said as he pointed to a car that was being let into the front gate.
“That looks like Peter’s car.” Tina said as she peeked around the corner of the building.
“Peter Garrett?”
“Yeah, he is running the whole program.”
“Then why the hell would he hire me to get onto the island and rescue some people that don’t really exist?” He asked himself as he hid back around the corner of the building.
“I don’t know, but I know that at one point he was wanting to infect someone, then put them on the main land to see how long they could last before they were stopped by the local law enforcement.”
“So why not just infect any normal person?”
“He wanted them to have a successful military back ground, to see if that experience would play a part in how the infected person would perform.”
“That son of a bitch, going to use me as an experiment.”
Just as they were watching Peter pull up to the front of the building, they heard some movement behind them. Tina turned around, and when she did she began to yell.
“What the hell.” Jacob said as he turned to see what Tina was yelling about.
“We need to go.” She said as she looked back to him.
“Lean back.” Jacob said as he took one arm and put it to her chest and pushed her back wards, while with his other hand he raised it with the pistol in it. He took careful aim and pulled the trigger, hitting the infected man that was coming up between the buildings at them, in the chest and dropping him between the buildings.
“We need to get out of here.” Jacob said as he stood up and motioned for her to follow him back down between the buildings. They went back between the buildings, and as they rounded the corner at the far end, they heard someone yell out, “Stop right there!”
They both looked over to see a soldier, out in the middle of the grass area, pointing his rifle at them. They looked at him, then Jacob looked over to Tina and told her, “When I fire, I want you to run towards the door.”
“What door?” She replied as she looked around for the door that he was talking about.
“The one over to our right.”
“Drop you weapons right there where you are standing.” The soldier yelled at them.
Jacob quickly fired several shots at the soldier, hitting him with at least one round. As Jacob was firing at the soldier, Tina ran for all she was worth towards the door that she was told to run too. As she was running to the door, Jacob continued to fire rounds at the soldier as he ran towards the door right behind her. When they made it to the door, Tina tried the handle, but it was locked. She pulled and pulled on the handle, but she could not get it to open. When Jacob got to the door, he could see that she was having trouble with the door.
“What’s going on, open the door.”
“It’s locked!”
“Here, stand back.” He yelled to her as he took the pistol and shot the door handle. When he did that, the door handle fell off of the door to the ground and Tina was able to easily open the door.
They both then ran inside and found themselves in another hall way.
“Now where are we?”
“We are in the main office complex, what was known as building 101.”
“Building 101?”
“Yeah, it used to be one of the lab facilities, but all of those functions were moved to building 257, back in the the early to mid nineties.”
“I don’t need a history lesson here, I want to know where we go from here to get to the bay.”
“We can go through on down the hall, get through to the lobby and go out the front door. Problem is that no matter where we go from here, we are going to be right in the middle of the chaos, this building is surrounded by security posts.”
As they were talking about where to go next, they heard people talking and they could hear them walking down through the halls. They both stopped talking and stood there just listening trying to figure out where the talking was coming from. They were straining their ears, trying to figure out exactly where the talking was coming from, then they knew as soon as they heard the ding of and elevator, the ding you hear just as the elevator comes to a floor and just before the doors open.
“They are just around the corner from where this hall leads.” Tina whispered as they were looking down the hall.
“Come on.” Jacob said as he walked down the hall towards the end where the elevator was supposed to be located.
“What if there are a lot of soldiers there?” Tina nervously asked as she walked behind him as they went down the hall.
“Hold on.” He said as he motioned for her to stop walking. He looked around the corner of the wall, seeing that there was no one around. The hall area all around the elevator’s was empty and there were no other signs that anyone was on that floor.
“Come on.” He motioned for her to follow him again. He walked over to the elevator, looked at the numbers above the door to see what floor the elevator was going to stop. He watched and could see that the elevator went up to the third floor. Once he saw the floor, they both jumped when they heard a gunshot that sounded like it was just out in the parking lot in front of the building.
“It’s getting closer, we should get out of here while we can.” Tina said as she was tugging at his shoulder.
“I wonder why they are going upstairs and not getting the hell off of this island.”
“I don’t know, but I don’t want to wait around and find out why.” Tina said nervously as the sounds of men yelling were getting louder and louder outside the building.
“But which way is the quickest way out of here?”
“Come on, follow me.” Tina said as she ran over to a side door, opened it and started to go inside of it.”
“Where does this lead?” Jacob asked as he ran up behind her, looking around to make sure that no one had seen them run across the lobby.
“It is a back access, it will get us close to the fence and we should be out of the view of the watch towers.”
“Good.” He replied as they both ran through the door.
But instead of finding themselves outside onto the grass, Jacob stops just as he gets through the door and realizes that they are not outside, but that they have just ran into a room where he could see a dozen armed soldiers, and at the other end of the room, there, in a long white lab type coat, with his light blue shirt and dark tie, was the man who had hired him to find missing people on the island.
“Peter?” Jacob asked as he stood there and looked around the room at the soldiers, and then looking at Peter, with a grimace of disgust upon his face, “You sent me here to set me up!”
“Yes, yes I did set you up. But you have to realize that we needed someone with your skill set, someone that was a natural born killer type. We want to see if those same traits will carry over to someone infected.” Peter explained as he slowly walked across the room right towards Jacob and Tina.
“I have done my part, now I want to go back to my work station.” Tina said as she stepped away from Jacob’s side and walked up to meet Peter face to face.
“Certainly, you have done an good job. We will prep Jacob and continue on to the next phase.” Peter said as he motioned for the guards to take control of Jacob and take him to another room so that they could go ahead with their plans of infecting him with the rabies virus.
Stripping him of his weapons, then taking his shirt off of him, “Come with us.” One of the soldiers commanded him.
Struggling against the guards, trying not to go too easily with them, looking Peter right in the face, “I am going to kill you.” Jacob said with such a promising look on his face.
“You may have been a killer, but now you are just an experiment, and when we are done with you, you will not remember who I am, let alone have any thoughts about me.” Peter said with a smirk on his face, as he watched the guards lead Jacob from the room.
“I will get you too.” Jacob threatened Tina as he looked at her as he was lead out of the room through another door that lead into another room, where he could see several tables lined up in the room, some of them with big lights above them. The same large lights that you would see above an operating table in any hospital.
Anxiously he looked around the room, and he could see the tables, and some counters along the walls. On the counters he could see an number of flasks, and test tubes in test tube holders. He could also see a centrifuge, and some other things that he thought looked like some type of high magnification microscopes.
“Lie your ass down on the table.” One of the guards ordered him as they almost threw him onto one of the tables in the middle of the room. They quickly began to strap his wrists and ankles down to the table top with the big leather straps that were connected to some side bars.
“You are all going to die soon.” He yelled out in defiance of them strapping him down to the table.
“Shut up, you are the one who is not going to be with us for long.” One of the guards yelled back at him as the guard smacked him on the forehead.
Once they had him strapped down to the table, all of the guards except one left the room, and as they walked out of the room, Peter came walking in.
“Well Jacob, I thought that you were going to be the only one that we were going to have fun with tonight, but thanks to Tina, we were able to find a friend of yours.” Peter announced as he turned to look at the door.
Jacob looked to the door, and as he did, he saw several guards walking into the room, and they were escorting the old man from the boat into the room. They had his hands handcuffed in front of him, and there was a guard to each side of him holding him by the arms leading him over to another table that was in the room.
“That man has nothing to do with me, I have no idea who he is. This is between you and I and nobody else, so let him go.” Jacob yelled as he watched the guards strapping the old man down on the other table.
“Oh no, I am sorry I can’t do that. You understand that there can be no witnesses to anything that we have going on out here. It is unfortunate, but you are the one who got him involved the minute that you hired him to bring you out to the island.” Peter explained as he watched them strap the old man down to the table.
“Let him go right now, and I may just let you live.” Jacob threatened Peter, but his threats were falling on deaf ears.
“Now, you two must have lots to talk about, but you will not have that much time. I suggest you just lie there and make yourselves comfortable. This will all be over with very shortly.” Peter said, almost laughing as he spoke. Walking out of the room, he seemed to try to provoke Jacob, and said, “I will be watching, can’t wait to see what you turn out to be.”
