Chapter 11

Once he had the helicopter set down on the field and had shut the engine down, he climbed out of the pilot’s seat, reached over and grabbed his bag and ran for the other side of the field, towards the parking lot. When he got to the side of the field, he was met by a number of people that ran up to him demanding to know who the hell he was and what he was doing landing a helicopter on the ball field in the middle of a ball game.

Jacob looked to the men that were yelling at him, then he told them, “I don’t have time for this right now, if you want it off of the field then you move it.” He then ran off of the field, and when he ran into the parking lot, he ran over to a woman who was trying to quickly usher her kid into the car. He ran up to the woman, grabbed her by the arm and swung her around and told her, “I don’t have time to explain, but I need your car.”

She looked at him and yelled back, “You can’t just take my car!”

He looked at her, wrinkled his brows, grabbed the keys from out of her hands and looked at her and said, “I’m taking your car, call the police and report me if you need too.” He then opened the front driver’s door, threw his bag into the front passenger seat, jumped into the car and peeled off out of the parking lot. He sped out of the area, getting onto the main road that lead back towards the docks. His mind was spinning, and a million thoughts were going through his mind as he flew down the road. He approached the entrance to the docks parking, looking around to see if the trucks were in sight as he approached. He did not see any dark colored trucks leaving the area. He quickly pulled into the dock parking lot, and drove straight to the dock side. He slammed the car into park, reached over grabbed the bag and picked up his rifle. He jumped from the car and ran to the end of the dock where the boat had docked before.

As he ran down the wooden dock, passing by several people that just stared as he ran past them with looks on their face like they had been a part of a movie. He ran to the end of the dock, readying his rifle for action, and right to where the boat had been docked before. As he ran up to the spot, he could clearly see that the dock site was empty. Almost with his stomach in his throat, and dropping his shoulders, he turned to look back, then as he did he saw the boat just past where he had parked the car. He had run right past the boat, so focused on this spot at the end of the dock. He ran back down the dock right to the boat, but when he did get there, there was nobody on the boat.

He jumped onto the boat, went to the pilot house and kicked the front door of the cabin in. He stepped inside, rifle in hand, and checked the inside of the boat for any people that may still be inside. He went all through the boat, but everyone was gone, and there was no sign of where they may have went to. He took the bag with the explosives inside, opened it up, turned on the remote trigger device and threw the bag down on the floor inside the pilot’s cabin. He then ran off of the boat, and as he got back down onto the docks, a man was walking past him with a fishing pole and a stringer of fish. The man walked by, then stopped and turned and looked back to Jacob and told him, “If your looking for the men that were on that boat, you just missed them. They took another man and put him into the back of a black suburban. You better hurry though, the man they put in there looked very sick.”

“Did you see which way they left?” He asked the man, very excited now that he knows that he has to hurry to stop them.

“No, I’m sorry, I just saw them pull out of the lot but I did not see which way they turned when they pulled out onto the main road.” The man replied as he shrugged his shoulders and turned to go about his business.

“Thank you for the information.” Jacob replied as he ran back to the car to try and catch up to the men. As he was backing up from his parking spot, he took the bomb detonator, raised it up and pointed it towards the boat. When he saw that there was no one near that boat that could get hurt, he hit the switch. When he did that, the plastic explosives he had put on the boat exploded, and the entire top of the boat exploded into pieces, destroying any usability of the boat. Smiling he looked back to the lot and sped off across the lot to get to the main road. He pulled up to the edge of the road, and looked down both directions trying to see if he could see the truck. Looking down the road, through the light of the street lights, he could see cars driving, but there was no sign of any trucks or suburbans. Then he thought that maybe the men went back to the old warehouse that they had been too earlier with the first infected man.

He pulled out of the parking lot onto the main road, cutting off another car almost causing him to swerve and drive off of the roadway. He cut the wheel, spun the tires and took off down the road towards town to get to the warehouse. Praying the entire way that he would be able to get there in time to stop the men from letting the infected man out so that he could infect others and spread the virus throughout the population. He cussed at cars that were slowing him down, and flipped off others that beeped their horns at him. Almost like a man on speed, he recklessly sped down the roads. After finally getting to the area of where the warehouse is located, he pulls up to the corner where he can see the front gate of the building. He stops, and looks down to the front gate, looking for the guards or any signs of the black suburban. He can’t see any movement at the gate, so he pulls out onto the road and drives down to the front gate. Pulling up to the gate, he sees that the gate is standing open and that there is no guard at the guard shack. He looks over to the building and sees that the front large door is open just as he had left it. He pulls the car into the gate and parks outside of the door. He grabs his rifle, steps out of the car and walks up to the side of the big open door. He looks back towards the road, then he looks around the edge of the door to see what or who is inside. He leans in, pointing the rifle everywhere that he looks so that he can instantly shoot if he needed too. He looks around the big bay area, but he don’t see anyone around.

He steps inside the building, and walks towards the stairs that lead up to the storage area above the offices. Just as he was about to step up to the first step, something out of the corner of his eye catches his attention. He turns and looks over, and on the floor he sees the body of the man from earlier still lying there on the floor. He decides, once seeing that, that there had been nobody at the building. He turns back for the door and goes back outside to get back to his car, and try to think of where they may have taken the infected man. As he walked back up to the car, and was reaching for the door handle, he sees some movement out of the corner of his eye, and he looks to the front gate and sees a man walking past. The man looked like maybe he was a homeless man, as the man was wearing a long coat that looked like it had some holes in it, and his hair was a mess. He watched the man walk past the until the man got to about the middle of the open gate, then the man stopped and slowly turned his head to look at him.

When the man turned his head to look at him, he thought for a moment that the man looked to be real dirty, but then the man opened his mouth and screamed. He then turned his whole body and began running right at him by the car. Jacob, stunned that the man was infected, opened his mouth and said, “Oh sh..” as he raised the rifle and pointed it at the man and pulled the trigger. He hit the man in the center of the chest, the man stumbled but continued towards him. He then squeezed off another round and hit the man in the chest again. He was about to fire again, but the man fell to the ground, wiggled around a little bit then died. Hoping he had killed the infected man before he could get to anyone else, and hoping that he could find Peter in the black suburban, he jumped back into the car, started it up, back around and headed to the front gate. He pulled up to the gate entrance, and when he looked down the road, he saw a black suburban sitting at the side of the road just down the block from where he was there at the building. “That has got to be him.” Jacob said to himself as he pulled out from the lot and hit the gas to go chase the suburban down. As he sped down the road, out of nowhere, someone ran out into the roadway and he slammed into the person. Trying not to kill anyone, and being startled, he jerked the wheel and the car came to a stop when it slammed into a parked car and died. He took a deep breath, shook his head from side to side and got his thoughts together. He reached over, grabbed his rifle and stepped out of the car. He walked over to the middle of the road, where the man that he had hit was lying. He walked up to the man who was lying face down, and took his foot and put it to the man’s side and rolled him over. He took a step back when he looked at the man’s face and saw that the man was an infected person. His attention was pulled away from the man on the ground when he heard a car engine start up. He looked up and saw the suburban pull away from the curb, and take off down the road away from him. He raised the rifle and fired off a couple rounds at the suburban. As he watched the suburban turn the corner and disappear from view, he heard some people scream a distance away behind him.

He turned around, and down the road, he saw cars parked in the street, some smoke and fire coming from several cars, and people running all around like he was looking at a riot. Then he saw about six people walking in his direction right down the middle of the road. He watched them for a minute, then he saw one of them scream, and the whole group of them began running at him. It was then that he could tell that they were all infected people, he raised up his rifle, hit the magazine release button and let the magazine fall to the ground. He pulled out a full magazine, loaded it into the rifle, raised the weapon and pointed it at the group running at him.

He took a deep breath, and said to himself, “Let’s get this over with.”
