ARTILLERY—large, powerful guns, such as cannons

BATTALION—military unit consisting of headquarters and two or more companies; a company consists of 80 to 250 soldiers

BAYONET—sharp blade attached to the end of a musket or rifle

BRIGADE—unit of an army consisting of two or more regiments

CASUALTY—someone who is wounded, captured, killed, or missing in a war

CAVALRY—unit of soldiers who fight on horseback

CORPS—large military unit consisting of two to five divisions

DEPLOY—place in battle formation

DIVISION—military unit consisting of several brigades

FLANK—the right or left of a military formation

FORTIFY—make stronger against an attack

GARRISON—a group of soldiers based in a town and ready to defend it

INFANTRY—soldiers who fight on foot

MILITIA—citizens who volunteer to serve as soldiers during emergencies

ORDERLY—soldier assigned to perform tasks for a superior officer

PIKE—road; short for turnpike

REGIMENT—military unit consisting of two or more battalions
