PART III

HE DIED FOR OUR SINS

THE PRIMITIVE CHRISTIAN CONFESSION received by Paul was “that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day” (1 Cor. 15:3–4; Chrysostom, Hom. on Cor., 38.2–3).

That Christ died “for our sins” is an article of faith confessed in every creed and taught in every catechism. There can be no adequate recollection of Jesus without confessing the meaning of his suffering and death (Augustine, CG 13,17).
