The AM of AMERICA will NOT be touching on the valuable variety found in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

NORMAL business strike with the letters of AM on AMERICA touching at the bottom of the letters.

For unknown reasons, a small number of circulation strikes were made using reverse dies bearing a wide AM of America. These dies were originally intended for collector coins (known as proof coins) but were erroneously processed as a circulation strike die and used to strike coins for circulation. There were early reports of a 1997 Wide AM cent discovered in 2001, but to date neither the authors or any other hobby representatives have been able to verify. All cents from 1993–2008 from both Mints should be checked for this variety.
