Golden $1 (Presidential/NA) | Small Diameter or “Matte” Edge

Look at: The edge of the Presidential/Native American coinage.

Look for: Smaller diameter coin with high upset rims that nearly cause the edges to touch the lettered edge.

Notice the “grainy” appearance of the above edge in comparison to the normal “smooth” edge shown below.

These errors obviously went through the Schuler edge-lettering machine with the edge-lettering die set too tight. The result is that the coins were force-spun, butted up all the way to the shoulder of the edge-lettering die, thus transferring a sort of matte effect from the shoulder of the edge lettering die to the edge of each coin.

The process also reduced the diameter of each coin significantly, in addition to creating extremely strong edge lettering and thicker rims; a plastic tube intended to hold 25 will only hold 23.
