I hope that the previous chapters have given you practical and tactical tools for being a more effective communicator. Applying them at work will help you achieve your professional goals. For some, that means advancing to the next stage of leadership in your organization. But leadership isn't always about having an impressive title. Most of the real work of an organization requires “lower-case leadership,” leadership in the moment. Getting people behind your ideas in tomorrow's team meeting is just as important as the CEO introducing a new initiative at the next “town hall” event. Even if our career aspirations don't include a corner office, we all want to see our ideas put into action. We all want our voices to be heard.
The last two chapters deal with leadership from two angles. First, we address the most basic elements of leadership and the language that's helpful for motivating those around you. Second, we look at what you have to sacrifice to be an effective leader, or your willingness to be vulnerable to others.
