10 June Six Day War ends with the capture of the Golan Heights by the IDF and humiliation of Syrian armed forces.

11 June The 45th Armoured Brigade (from April 1969 the 188th) or Barak Brigade deploys to defend the Golan Heights area.

29 August Arab leaders meet in Khartoum and declare ‘Three Noes’ – no peace with Israel; no recognition of Israel; no negotiations with Israel.

1971

May Egyptian armed forces begin planning for war.

August Syria breaks off diplomatic relations with Jordan.

1972

24 October Sadat informs Army High Council of coming war.

1973

21 January Plans are co-ordinated for combined offensive against Israel.

3 May President Assad of Syria visits Moscow and acquires massive new shipments of Soviet weapons including the most modern air defence system.

7 May Following major Egyptian manoeuvres along Canal, Israel orders partial mobilisation at great economic expense.

6 June Syrian Defence Minister General Tlas arrives in Cairo with a large military delegation to finalise plans for war.

13 September Syrian and Israeli combat planes clash over Lebanon with 13 Syrian aircraft destroyed.

24 September Using the air battle as a pretext, Syria moves large forces to the disengagement line on the Golan Heights.

26 September Yitzhak Rabin, Israel’s ambassador to the USA declares; ‘There never was a period in which Israel’s security situation seemed as good as now.’ The 77th OZ Battalion of the 7th Armoured Brigade is ordered to deploy to the Golan Heights in support of the Barak Brigade as a counter-attack force.

4–5 October The remainder of the 7th Armoured Brigade deploys to the Golan.

Saturday 6 October, 1400hrs War begins on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur 5743) when Egyptian and Syrian forces launch co-ordinated offensives across the Suez Canal and on the Golan Heights. Heavy tank battles take place throughout the night as Syrian forces breach the Israeli defences along the Purple Line.

Sunday 7 October Syria resumes the offensive with the 1st and 3rd Armoured Divisions launching major attacks in the southern and northern sectors respectively. IAF attacks Syrian armour concentrations and conducts first missions against SA-2 and SA-3 sites.

Monday 8 October Heavy fighting continues throughout the day including attacks by the Assad Republican Guard equipped with T-62 tanks. Despite reaching a point overlooking the Sea of Galilee, the Syrians halt their offensive after losing some 600 tanks. IAF mounts first raids against Syrian airbases as well as radar installations and SAM sites.

Tuesday 9 October The Syrians launch yet another ferocious assault at 0800hrs together with commando air assaults behind the Israeli lines. In the northern sector the 7th Armoured Brigade is almost overrun. Israeli reserve formations counter-attack on a broad front supported by air power in the southern sector where the Barak Brigade is almost totally destroyed. Syrian forces halt and a tactical withdrawal begins.

Wednesday 10 October The IDF continues mopping up operations of the Syrian forces remaining inside the Purple Line. IAF attacks economic targets such as oil refineries and power stations.

Thursday 11 October The IDF mounts its major counter-offensive in the northern sector of the Golan Heights on a narrow front towards Damascus with Ugdas Raful and Laner. Ugda Musa conducts a holding action on the southern sector of the Golan Heights.

Friday 12 October Israeli offensive reaches deep into Syria. Ugda Laner springs a trap for the 3rd Iraqi Armoured Division with 80 Iraqi tanks destroyed for no Israeli loss.

Saturday 13 October After a costly and abortive tank attack against Tel Shams on the previous day, a battalion of paratroopers captures the feature suffering just four wounded.

Sunday 14 October IDF halts offensive and consolidates its positions in its salient inside Syria within artillery range of Damascus.

Monday 15 October IAF attacks Iraqi reinforcements arriving in Syria. The Israelis switch priority of supplies and airpower to the Sinai Desert against the Egyptians.

Tuesday 16 October Jordanian 40th Armoured Brigade mounts an unsupported attack against Ugda Laner.

Wednesday 17 October Ugda Musa replaces Ugda Laner inside the salient with all Israeli forces consolidating their positions as long-range artillery bombards the outskirts of Damascus.

Thursday 18 October For the next four days, Syrian, Iraqi and Jordanian forces mount unco-ordinated and generally ineffective attacks against Israeli positions.

Saturday 20 October The most effective of these attacks occurs in a seven-hour battle with the Arab forces losing some 120 tanks.

Monday 22 October A combined operation by heliborne paratroopers and Golani infantrymen recaptures Mount Hermon. UN ceasefire comes into effect at 1852hrs that night.

Tuesday 23 October Second ceasefire comes into effect but violations continue on both the northern and southern fronts.

Wednesday 24 October The Soviet Union threatens to send troops to support the Arabs. Second ceasefire brings hostilities to a halt with Israeli forces around 100km from Cairo and within artillery range of Damascus.

October 1973–May 1974 Syrians continue hostilities with war of attrition against Israeli salient.

1974

June Following the Israeli/Syrian Disengagement Agreement, Israeli forces withdraw to the 1967 ceasefire line.

July Disengagement of Israeli and Arab forces is completed under UN auspices with buffer zone created between the Israelis and Syrians.

1981

14 December Israel formally annexes the Golan Heights.
