adjustable ring (magic loop) Leaving a 6"/15 cm tail, form a loop in the yarn and hold it in your nondominant hand with the working yarn over your index finger (A). Draw the working yarn through the loop so you have 1 loop on the hook.

Work the appropriate number of build-up chains for the first stitch (B). Then, work stitches into the ring as instructed (e.g., single, double, or treble crochet), working each stitch over the loop yarn and the tail yarn (C and D). When you’ve crocheted the last stitch, separate the tail from the loop and pull it up to close the loop. You may leave an open hole in the center or pull it up tightly to close the ring.

Other Techniques

Changing to a new color. To change yarn colors at the end of a row without fastening off the old color, work the last stitch in the old color as a partial stitch, stopping when two loops remain on the hook. Work the last “yarnover, pull through two loops on hook” with the new color, then continue with the new color. To change colors at the end of a round, work the joining slip stitch in the new color.

Felting. Place item in a pillowcase, and close it with a rubber band. Place the pillowcase in the washing machine with pair of old jeans to add to the agitation. Set the washing machine to the hottest temperature and lowest water level. Add a small amount of soap, and begin the wash cycle. Before the cycle ends, stop the machine and check the felting progress. If more is needed, reset the wash cycle and continue. It’s important to check the felting progress often, every five to ten minutes, to ensure you get the desired size.

Stringing beads onto yarn. Use a specially designed big-eye beading needle, or use a do-it-yourself threader made from sewing thread. Here’s how:

  1. 1. Thread a 6-inch length of sewing thread onto a sewing needle. Tie the ends together in a tight overhand knot.
  2. 2. Place the end of the yarn into the loop formed by the thread.
  3. 3. Using the sewing needle, pick up several beads at a time and allow them to fall down the needle and thread to the yarn.
  4. 4. With your fingers, carefully pull the beads down over the spot where the yarn and the thread cross, then down onto the yarn.

Continue picking up beads and sliding them onto the yarn until all the beads are strung.

Twisted cord. Cut two or more strands of yarn at least three times the desired finished length. Place an overhand knot at each end of the bundle of yarn (A). Put a crochet hook or pencil into one end to act as a handle. Slip the other end over a hook or doorknob, or have someone hold one end (B). Using the “handle,” twist the yarn until it becomes tight. Pinch the yarn at the halfway point and bring the knotted ends together, allowing the cord to twist on itself (C). Carefully untie the knot and retie the strands together at each end.

Using markers in rounds. Place marker at the first stitch of the round and move it up as you work the rounds.

Working into back bump of chain. With the wrong side of the chain facing, insert hook into the bumps on the back of the chain. (The right side of the chain is a series of Vs.)
