Lucrezia returned to her village, her mind still whirling over the vampir’s revelations. To think, all along they’d thought whatever was coming could be easily controlled and prepared for. And now, to find out it was more than that?
She turned to Tytus. “You still think it was a good idea to move us here?”
“I have no doubt about it. And especially given what’s coming.”
“I won’t risk my family, Tytus. We’ve been through too much.”
“And I wouldn’t ask you to.” He glanced at the skies, then checked his watch. “I should get back to Fiona. And Declan and Constanza, fill them all in on what’s coming.”
“You think Constanza could reach out to her parents? As Hades’ old guards, surely they can help keep us all safe?”
Tytus shook his head. “they’ll have bigger fish to fry, if what I fear happens will happen. No. the best way to handle any of this is to get the first leg on Zalmoxis. The gods will be finding every weapon at their arsnal to deal with him. We’ll do the same.”
Lucrezia nodded, then hugged him. “Have a safe trip, then. And maybe shift a bit farther away than last time. It took us nearly a month to clean the forest you ruined.”
Tytus rolled his eyes. “Fine.”
He turned, ready to leave, but a cry in the distance stopped him.
“Mom!”
Lucrezia turned, her heart in her throat. “Luca?” Her son was running to her, a panicked look on his features. “What’s going on? Are you ok?”
Panting, he nodded. “I’m fine. It’s not me, it’s Dad. I can’t find him.”
Tytus was by her side, holding her when she swayed. “What do you mean, you can’t find him?”
“He’s not...” Luca met her gaze. “He’s gone. No trace.”
Lucrezia swayed, and welcomed darkness gladly. Anything was better than the thought of being without her mate.
