1. In Renaissance medical theory, choler (or bile) was one of the four humours, or fluids in the body, which were thought to determine human temperament. The other three were blood, phlegm and melancholy (or black bile). Choler was supposed to make a man irascible; choler adust was the condition where too much black bile made him melancholic.
