1. In the final gift to the French state, Renoir added two Caillebotte paintings. But they were largely overlooked by the most influential art historians, perhaps due to their last-minute inclusion. John Rewald’s monumental History of Impressionism, published in 1946, considers Caillebotte for the legacy of his bequest, but it lists the familiar seven as the exclusive masters of impressionism and scarcely mentions Caillebotte’s artistic prowess.
