14. The same thing has arguably happened in U.S. news with the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Facebook and Twitter have directed enormous readership to articles about racism and violence against black communities in America. The underlying facts haven’t changed much; blacks have faced oppression and suffered police brutality for years. But newsmakers’ interest in covering these stories has changed. Social media has made it unavoidably obvious that these shootings are happening and that millions of people want to learn more about them. The illumination of previously under-covered stories is probably a good thing, overall. But a dispiriting implication is that the news media—which remains disproportionately white—played down these stories for decades, somewhat like the music labels (also dominated by white men) overlooked the rise of hip-hop.
