Dramatis personae

ALLEN, John: Hartford magistrate who halts John London’s scheme against Goffe.

ANDROS, Sir Edmund: English colonial administrator and governor of the Dominion of New England, 1686–9.

BARKSTEAD, John: Major general and regicide who flees England in 1660 but is captured by Sir George Downing and executed in 1662.

BREDON, Thomas: Royalist inhabitant of Boston who takes news of Whalley and Goffe to the English court in London in the early 1660s.

CARR, Robert: Royal commissioner sent to New England in 1664.

CARTWRIGHT, George: Royal commissioner sent to New England in 1664.

CHARLES I: King of England, Scotland, and Ireland, 1625–49.

CHARLES II: King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660 (though his supporters dated the start of his reign to the moment of Charles I’s execution in 1649, which was later codified in law).

CHAUNCEY, Charles: President of Harvard who meets Whalley and Goffe when they first arrive in America.

CLARENDON, Edward Hyde, Earl of: Lord Chancellor of England, 1658–67.

CORBET, Miles: Regicide who flees England in 1660 but is captured by Sir George Downing and executed in 1662.

CROMWELL, Oliver: Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland in the 1650s.

DAVENPORT, John: Puritan minister who preaches a sermon in New Haven to ‘hide the outcasts’, hosts Whalley and Goffe in New Haven, visits them in Milford, and receives letters from William Hooke, which are passed on to Davenport and then Goffe.

DIXWELL, John: Parliamentarian and signatory of Charles I’s death warrant who flees to New England after a brief stay in Hanau.

ENDECOTT, John: Governor of Massachusetts Bay who greets Whalley and Goffe on their arrival in America.

GILBERT, Matthew: New Haven magistrate who helps to delay the progress of Kellond and Kirke in May 1661.

GOFFE, Frances: Daughter of Edward Whalley and wife of William Goffe, who corresponds with her husband throughout his time in New England.

GOFFE, William: Major general and regicide who flees to New England in 1660.

GOODWIN, William: Neighbour of John Russell in Hadley and correspondent of John Davenport.

GOOKIN, Daniel: Travels on The Prudent Mary with Whalley and Goffe, hosts them, and is accused of holding and managing their property.

HARRISON, Thomas: Parliamentarian and leader of the Fifth Monarchists who is executed for regicide in 1660.

HOOKE, Jane: Edward Whalley’s sister.

HOOKE, William: Whalley’s brother-in-law, a friend and correspondent of Davenport, his letters to whom are passed on to Goffe.

HUTCHINSON, Thomas: Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay; his house is ransacked in 1765, at which point Goffe’s diary disappears.

JAMES II: King of England, Scotland, and Ireland, 1685–8.

JONES, John: Welsh brother-in-law of Oliver Cromwell and military leader who is executed for regicide in 1660.

JONES, William: Son of regicide John Jones who travels with Whalley and Goffe on The Prudent Mary, and hosts the regicides in New Haven.

KELLOND, Thomas: Agent sent by Governor Endecott to capture Whalley and Goffe on an ultimately ill-fated mission in May 1661.

KIRKE, Thomas: Agent sent by Governor Endecott to capture Whalley and Goffe on an ultimately ill-fated mission in May 1661.

LAUD, William: Archbishop of Canterbury under Charles I (from 1633) who is arrested in 1640 and executed in 1645.

LEETE, William: Deputy governor then governor of New Haven who hampers Kellond and Kirke’s attempts to capture Whalley and Goffe, later writes to John Norton to defend his actions, and perhaps keeps the ‘Angel of Hadley’ legend quiet.

LONDON, John: Resident of Windsor, Connecticut, who testifies he has seen William Goffe in Hartford in 1679.

LORD, Richard: Proprietor of Hartford who claims to be involved in a plot to capture Whalley and Goffe in the early 1660s.

MATHER, Increase: Puritan minister and correspondent of John Davenport who aids the delivery of the regicides’ letters.

MAVERICK, Samuel: Royal commissioner sent to New England in 1664.

MORRICE, William: Secretary of state to Charles II.

NEWBURY, Benjamin: John Russell’s brother-in-law, resident of Hadley who perhaps keeps quiet the ‘Angel of Hadley’ legend.

NICHOLAS, Edward: Secretary of state to Charles I and Charles II.

NICHOLS, Richard: Royal commissioner sent to New England in 1664.

OKEY, John: Regicide who flees England in 1660 but is captured by Sir George Downing and executed in 1662.

PETERS, Hugh: Puritan minister who is closely identified with New England, is a chaplain in the New Model Army, and is executed for regicide in 1660.

PINCHON, John: Deputy to the Massachusetts general court who claims to be involved in a plot to capture Whalley and Goffe in the early 1660s.

POWELL, Thomas: Resident of Hartford who stops John London capturing Goffe.

RANDOLPH, Edward: Colonial administrator and leading figure in the administration of the Dominion of New England (1686–9) who develops a fixation with Whalley and Goffe and those who protect them in the early 1660s.

RUSSELL, John: Hadley minister who is supported by John Davenport in his split from Wethersfield, hosts Whalley and Goffe in Hadley, and receives a donation for the regicides from Richard Saltonstall via Edward Collins.

SPERRY, Richard: New Haven landowner who protects Whalley and Goffe when they cannot stay at the Judges Cave.

STILES, Ezra: President of Yale College and author of the first full-length book on the regicides in America.

TALCOTT: John Russell’s brother-in-law, resident of Hadley, perhaps puts a halt to John London’s plot against Goffe and keeps quiet the ‘Angel of Hadley’ legend.

TEMPLE, Thomas: Colonel who sends information concerning Whalley and Goffe to William Morrice in 1661.
