Dad Told Us to Wave Goodbye, so We All Waved and Yelled Goodbye. Goodbye. (Goodbye)
A man put a ‘For Sale’ sign up in our yard, and a couple of weeks later we were leaving Canberra. On the way to Texas we stopped off in Fiji, and I remember the moment when we got off the plane because that was the first plane I’d ever been on. I watched through the window as the stairs were driven over to the side so that we could get out. There was a large couple from Florida sitting next to us who kept dabbing their heads with serviettes. The serviettes were stained with sweat because the plane’s air-conditioning had broken. On the bus that took us to our hotel, we drove along a road with the windows down. Beyond the road I could see the ocean. And, at the hotel, we passed a man with a sign that said ‘Tour Guide’. He was standing in the corner and greeting people as they arrived. Mostly everyone ignored the tour guide. I smiled at the tour guide, and he smiled back a little bit. We had a week in Fiji, and I only went to the beach once.
