Berlin has all the usual big city attractions like museums, galleries and parks, but those who want to see the city in a different way will find plenty of more adventurous options. With its abundant natural features and unique structures, Berlin can feel like a playground for visitors of all ages.
t Base flying from the top of the Park Inn hotel on Alexanderplatz
One of the most popular base flying spots in the city, the plunge at Park Inn hotel in Alexanderplatz involves dropping off the top of the 125-m (410-ft) rooftop. Participants are secured by a special winch rappel system, the kind used by stuntmen, which reaches almost free fall speed.
Driving a Trabant – the boxy, toy-like car synonymous with the GDR – is a unique way to experience the city. It’s possible to drive yourself and your group privately, take on a task-filled adventure or enjoy a leisurely tour where participants drive in a convoy, listening in to a guide via radio equipment. Tours last up to two hours.
The sight of the iconic Die Welt helium balloon – one of the world’s biggest – hovering over central Berlin is familiar to most residents and visitors. For €23 you can float 152 m (500 ft) over Checkpoint Charlie and enjoy the pan oramic views which span major sights like Potsdamer Platz, the Brandenburger Tor, the Tiergarten and Alexanderplatz. Rides usually take 15 minutes but longer options are available, as are helicopter flights from the same company.
There are many ways to explore Berlin for those who don’t like heights or driving. Nordic walkers can be found in many of the city’s parks, while boat trips along the Spree or on one of Berlin’s lakes are a relaxing way to enjoy the city. For a pleasant day trip, take the train to Potsdam, which is full of castles and gardens.
