A fascinating quarter at any time of day, the Alfama comes to life in the late afternoon and early evening; time your walk for this hour, when the locals emerge at their doorways and the small taverns start to fill. Given the steep streets and steps of the neighbourhood, the least strenuous approach is to start at the top and work your way down. A wander through the maze of winding alleyways will reveal picturesque corners and crumbling churches, plus panoramic views from shady terraces, such as the Miradouro de Santa Luzia. A new generation of younger residents has also resulted in a small number of trendy shops and bars.
