This is the busiest part of Portugal, especially the central squares of Rossio and Praça da Figueira. Totally rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755, the area was one of Europe’s first examples of town planning. Stroll the wide streets to admire the large Neo-Classical buildings, before absorbing more of the atmosphere and surroundings from one of the bustling pavement cafés. Nearby Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, a pedestrianized street where restaurants display tanks of live lobsters, allows for a more leisurely pace.
