Portugal’s former maritime glory, expressed in imposing, exuberant buildings such as the Jerónimos monastery, is evident everywhere in Belém. Silted up since the days of the caravels, this picturesque area along the waterfront was restructured at Salazar’s insistence, in an attempt to revive awareness of and celebrate the country’s Golden Age. A stroll here is consequently littered with historically significant sights: Praça do Império was laid out for the 1940 Exhibition of the Portuguese World, while Praça Afonso de Albuquerque was dedicated to Portugal’s first viceroy of India. The Palácio de Belém, restored in the 18th century, briefly housed the royal family after the earthquake of 1755.
