The riverside quarter of Porto is a warren of narrow, twisting streets and shadowy arcades. Behind pastel-painted façades, many in faded glory, a working population earns its living, gossips through open windows and mixes in lively street scenes. As well as local life, Ribeira also offers plenty of trendy bars, cafés, boutiques and restaurants.
t Ponte de Dom Luís
The district is dominated at its eastern end by the Ponte de Dom Luís I, which connects the two cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Constructed in 1886, it was designed by Theophile Seyrig – a business partner of Gutave Eiffel. Spanning 172 m (564 ft), it was the longest metal arch bridge in the world when it was first built. Although it no longer holds this accolade, it is still an impressive feat of engineering and offers amazing views of Ribeira from its upper tier.
