ANALYZING LEARNING PROBLEMS

For those students who have difficulty comprehending the spoken language teachers should attempt to determine the students' problem areas by means of diagnostic tests or individual conferences. Is the student unable to hear the sounds and intonation patterns? Has her capacity for remembering sounds not developed sufficiently? Once the teacher knows what aspects of listening comprehension are causing the students' problems and how they are attempting to solve their problems, suggestions can be made as to what kinds or activities they need to engage in and how they might alter their approach to the task of mastering these activities and skills involved. Most likely the students need to hear more spoken language, and they need to be taught how to listen and what to listen for.
