*The crew’s Instructor Pilot was Dave Rogan, of Middleboro, Kentucky, and he was indeed “seasoned.” At 29, Rogan was older than most combat aircrew, ancl be had already seen much combat flying when he was tasked with teaching the ropes to Gamble’s crew. Rogan had joined the RCAF in April 1941, and had been in England since November 1941 flying twin engine Bristol “Blenheim” light bombers before transferring to the Eighth Air Force in September 1942. He had 18 missions in as a B-17 first pilot when he began flying with Gamble’s crew, and after completing his 25 mission tour on August 12, 1943, he went on to fly an additional 33 missions as a B-29 aircraft commander in the Pacific.
