*Right after this mission Sgt. Grimm was ordered back to the Continental United States to attend an officer’s training course he had previously applied for, but now vigorously opposed since his comrades in arms were hurt. He did everything he could to return to combat, and was finally reassigned to the ETO, where he flew an additional 29 missions with the 306th Bomb Group between Feb. 19, 1945 and April 11, 1945. Forty-seven years later, in Feb. 1992, Grimm was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in recognition of his wartime service.
