*There are two lead group formation diagrams in the 303rd’s mission file for January 11, 1944 and they are in conflict. One shows The Eight Ball with PFF ships on each wing, and Lt. H.J. Eich, Jr.’s No. 448 in the No. 4. slot. Another shows Lt. W.A. Purcell’s Baltimore Bounce in the No. 3 position with No. 448 in the No. 4 slot. But Purcell’s loss is well documented shortly after this initial attack, and Eich’s aircraft apparently fell much later in the battle. Appropriately, one of the lead group formation diagrams contains this caution: “N.B. The formation varied and A/C frequently changed position as a result of our losses.” The writer’s present conclusion is the “No. 4” ship was actually the lost PFF ship, B-17F 42-3486, and that only two other B-17s were lost from the lead group’s lead squadron—Lt. Purcell’s Baltimore Bounce inbound to the target and Lt. Eich’s No. 448 after the target. Anyone having additional information on this subject is encouraged to contact the author.
