THE KILLER

“This is a stick-up!” barked the burly leader of the four masked men as they entered the Third National Bank. “Any of you twitch an eyelid and you’ll be cold meat. You there with the gimp, get back of that cage and open the safe or I’ll bat your skull open.”

The terrified employees obeyed the gang leader’s orders and the mob made a safe getaway with $46,000, but not before one of the gang ruthlessly shot and killed the cashier.

Informed of the above, the Professor went into action. He was satisfied the robbery was the work of the Ardmore mob composed of Joe Kreble, Rex Bender, Tony Faracchi and Dick Doran. After tapping every possible underworld source, Fordney was certain of the following:

1. One of the four, an ex-automobile racer, was the getaway driver for the gang.

2. Figuring on a side racket, Rex Bender had tried for a month to get the driver to go in with him on the deal, but the driver was leery. He didn’t trust Bender; thought he might be pulling a double cross.

3. The driver and Joe Kreble recently had won heavily from Dick Doran in a crap game run by the uncle of one of the mob.

4. The killer of the cashier and the driver are very close friends.

5. On a recent stock market tip Doran netted $9,000 which he split with the man who murdered the cashier as the latter put up the money.

The Professor pressed his buzzer. Sergeant Bill Jopke entered.

“Go out and bring in…dead or alive!” snapped Fordney.
