Solution—It’s in the Bag
Fordney believed Hill innocent because however rattled, no man would deliberately put his own bloodstained card in a handbag he had sent as a gift and leave it for the police to discover. And, as Beverly could not possibly have put it in the bag after being shot and close it (Fordney unclasped it), this was proof not only that the girl was murdered but that the killer put Hill’s bloodstained card in the bag in order to frame Hill if suicide were questioned. He might have got away with it had he not closed the bag. John Butler was tried and convicted.
